Can Organic P Inputs Alleviate P Limitation Effects on Nutrient Uptake and Biological N2-Fixing Capacity of Hairy Vetch (Vicia villosa)?

چکیده

Abstract Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient in many agroecosystems and, apart from affecting plant growth, can also limit biological N 2 fixation (BNF) by leguminous plants. Thus, increasing P supply have positive effect on BNF particularly P-deficient soils. Here, we provide new insights into the response of hairy vetch ( Vicia villosa ), widely adopted as legume cover crop, to limitations, comparing effects inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) growth capacity. This was achieved means greenhouse experiment which rhizobia-inoculated grown P-limited agricultural soil changes nitrogen (N) uptake, capacity, phosphatases activities were evaluated function Pi Po inputs, form orthophosphate or phytic acid, respectively. When compared conditions where primarily limited rather than directly due high costs symbiotic fixation, addition substantially enhanced (threefold), nodule formation (16-fold), acquisition (sixfold), efficiency (sevenfold). In contrast, even with highest dose Po, increase formation, acquisition, capacity (1.7, 3.5, 2.4 2.1-fold, respectively) much less expressed, indicating that could only minimally access sources over period order alleviate limitation under conditions. These findings suggest will not be able sufficient for improving inputs low-fertility cropping systems rely inputs.

Nutrient Limitation of Native and Invasive N2-Fixing Plants in Northwest Prairies

Nutrient rich conditions often promote plant invasions, yet additions of non-nitrogen (N) nutrients may provide a novel approach for conserving native symbiotic N-fixing plants in otherwise N-limited ecosystems. Lupinus oreganus is a threatened N-fixing plant endemic to prairies in western Oregon and southwest Washington (USA). We tested the effect of non-N fertilizers on the growth, reproducti...

Cropping history affects nodulation and symbiotic efficiency of distinct hairy vetch (<i>Vicia villosa</i> Roth.) genotypes with resident soil rhizobia

Compatible rhizobia strains are essential for nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth, HV). We evaluated how past HV cultivation affected nodulation and BNF across host genotypes. Five groups of similar HV genotypes were inoculated with soil dilutions from six paired fields, three with 10-year HV cultivation history (HV+) and three with no history (H...

Immobilization of Lead Migrating from Contaminated Soil in Rhizosphere Soil of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and Hairy Vetch (Vicia villosa) Using Hydroxyapatite

This study conducted plant growth tests using a rhizobox system to quantitatively determine the distance of immobilization lead migrating from contaminated soil into uncontaminated rhizosphere soil, and to assess the lead phases accumulated in rhizosphere soil by sequential extraction. Without the hydroxyapatite, exchangeable lead fractions increased as the rhizosphere soil got closer to the co...

effect of drought and salinity stresses on germination indices of vetch (vicia villosa l.)

one of the important issues in the arid and semi-arid regions is the water deficit and soil salinity. therefore, selecting tolerant species to salinity and drought especially in seed germination and emergence stage is important. in the present study the effects of drought and salt stress on seed germination of vetch (vicia villosa l.) which is palatable forage was investigated. the germination ...
